Following the death of an agent in East Berlin, Bond attends a London auction where he identifies a fake Fabergé egg and tracks its owner, the exiled Afghan prince Kamal Khan, to his palace in India. There, he discovers Khan is working with a corrupt Soviet general, Orlov, who is smuggling stolen Kremlin treasures out of the USSR. Bond learns that Orlov intends to replace these treasures with a nuclear warhead during a circus performance in East Germany to force Western Europe into disarmament. Bond travels to East Germany, infiltrates the circus, and eventually boards a train to reach the target. He manages to stop the detonation of the warhead and confronts the conspirators.
