A psychic man in a small California town must confront a mysterious figure who serves as a gateway for malevolent entities.

The story

Odd Thomas is a psychic living in a small California town who can see 'bodachs'—mysterious creatures that feed on fear and misery. When he notices a strange man nicknamed 'Fungus Bob' swarming with these creatures, Odd realizes the man is planning something violent. After discovering a mysterious doorway in Bob's house where hundreds of bodachs are entering the world, Odd reports his suspicions to his mentor, Chief Porter. The Chief assigns deputies to follow Bob as Odd attempts to prevent a looming catastrophe in their community.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Odd Thomas, a psychic who sees 'bodachs' (creatures feeding on misery), identifies a man named Bob Robertson, nicknamed 'Fungus Bob,' as a threat. Odd discovers a doorway in Bob's house where bodachs are entering the world and alerts Chief Porter. After a series of visions and a confrontation at a church, Odd finds Bob shot to death in his bathtub, realizing the encounter was with a restless spirit. Chief Porter is later shot in a home invasion but saved by a medallion Odd gave him. Odd discovers Bob was eliminated by co-conspirators because he was being investigated. The plot culminates at a mall where Officer Eckles murders security staff and Officer Varner begins a shooting spree. Odd disables Eckles and drives away from a van packed with explosives intended for the mall. He manages to escape as the van explodes, incinerating Varner. Odd is hailed as a hero but learns his girlfriend, Stormy, was killed in the mall shooting. He bids her spirit a tearful farewell and travels to Las Vegas to continue his crusade.
