A young woman agrees to impersonate a dying millionaire’s son’s fiancée, only for the supposedly dead father to wake up and complicate the charade.

The story

On his deathbed, consul and millionaire Jonathan Reynold asks his spoiled son Tobias to introduce him to his fiancée, but elegant Gloria is nowhere to be found. Desperate to fulfill his father’s last wish, Tobias persuades Eva Schmidt, a singer and wardrobe assistant he has just met, to pose as his fiancée. Jonathan is delighted by the down-to-earth young woman and peacefully falls asleep. The next day, however, he unexpectedly wakes up with renewed strength. Tobias must keep the deception going because his father’s doctor forbids him from revealing the truth, while Gloria still wants Tobias and Eva begins to enjoy her assumed role.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

On his deathbed, consul and millionaire Jonathan Reynold asks his spoiled son Tobias to finally introduce him to his fiancée. But the elegant Gloria is nowhere to be found. Desperate to grant his father’s last wish nonetheless, Tobias persuades singer and wardrobe assistant Eva Schmidt, whom he has only just met by chance, to pretend to be his fiancée. Jonathan Reynold is delighted by the sight of the pretty, down-to-earth young woman and peacefully falls asleep. But the next day, the supposedly deceased man unexpectedly wakes up, and, against all expectations, his strength returns. To spare his father, Tobias has no choice but to keep up the charade for the time being, and Eva must continue playing her part. When Jonathan Reynold plans a big party, his son faces two problems: he cannot tell his frail father the truth, because his doctor, Dr. Heizer, strictly forbids it. On the other hand, Gloria does not want to simply give up Tobias, while Eva is clearly enjoying her role too. Thus a comedy of mistaken identities unfolds, until the consul learns Eva Schmidt’s true identity. He then does everything he can to make Tobias realize that Eva is a much better match for him as his chosen one. He prevents Eva from leaving for Schleswig and invites her to his favorite restaurant. At the sight of the “seriously ill” consul dancing the samba, Dr. Heizer suffers a nervous breakdown. After Jonathan tells a press photographer that Eva is his future daughter-in-law, and the news appears in a tabloid, Gloria and her mother leave Munich, clearing the way for Eva and Tobias to be together.
