Claire Clauster spends a year planning a perfect Christmas for her husband Nick and children Channing, Taylor, and Sammy. When the family ignores her efforts and her goal to win a 'Best Holiday Mom' contest, Claire becomes increasingly frustrated. After a series of mishaps, including a theft and a missed dance show, she buys a 1976 AMC Pacer and drives toward California to gatecrash the contest. Meanwhile, the family falls into disarray: Taylor's relationship with DJ Sweatpants fails due to a misunderstanding about her dating history, and Sammy deals with a breakup. On Christmas morning, the family finds Claire on the set of the 'Zazzy Tims' show, where she goes viral after admitting she felt unappreciated. The following day, the family reunites with her on television, and they reconcile. A year later, the family and their neighbors, the Wang-Wassermans, go on a ski trip together, with Claire finally relaxing while her family prepares dinner.
