Refugees face deadly hazards on the route: some are killed by mines, while others drown or freeze. Their luggage also conceals drugs being smuggled across the border. Chrysa feels guilty about her work but needs the money to support her family. The gang’s ruthless boss, Ivo, is also the father of her child. Her work leaves her caught between the need to provide for her family and the risks and guilt of smuggling.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Chrysa earns her living smuggling people across the Evros River, which marks the border between Greece and Turkey. She mainly takes children across the river, putting their lives in danger, because a minefield dating from the Cyprus conflict lies not far from the river. Time and again, refugees step on mines at night and are killed; others drown or freeze to death. The luggage is used to hide drugs that are to be smuggled across the border. Chrysa feels guilty about her work, but she needs the money to support her family, and the gang’s boss is the ruthless Ivo, who is also the father of her child. One night, when Greek soldier Giannis, who volunteers to clear the minefields, sees Chrysa with the refugees, he seeks to make contact with her and falls in love with her. One day, they risk fleeing together, hoping for a better future. However, Ivo’s gang pursues them.
