The story

Martin, a widowed father, wakes up his two children, Ella and Charlie, after their home is foreclosed, claiming that they are merely going on a road trip. At a restaurant, he deliberately gives their dog human food, much to Ella's objection, and later puts the dog down at a SPCA shelter. He eventually reveals that they are heading to Nebraska.
