A stolen German tow truck and a badly timed bridge demolition leave four French soldiers stranded during the debacle.
The story
During the debacle, Tassin, Sergeant Major Chaudard, Pithivier, and Lieutenant Duvauchel have just freed the Seventh Company with a stolen German tow truck. The four set out again as scouts for the company, while Colonel Blanchet prepares to blow up a bridge near Mother Crouzy’s mill. The timing goes badly: the bridge explodes as the truck crosses, leaving the four soldiers stranded and forcing them to work out how to get moving again. Their scouting mission is interrupted before they can continue with the company.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The further adventures of the Seventh Company’s trio during the debacle: Tassin (Henri Guybet), Sergeant Major Chaudard (Pierre Mondy), Pithivier (Jean Lefebvre), and Lieutenant Duvauchel (Érik Colin) have freed the Seventh Company using the German tow truck they stole. The four set off again in the tow truck as scouts for the company. Meanwhile, Colonel Blanchet (Robert Lamoureux), now alone without the rest of the command staff (who were captured at the end of the previous film), is going to blow up a bridge near the mill belonging to the shrewish Mother Crouzy (Jackie Sardou). Unfortunately, the bridge explodes just as the four men’s tow truck is crossing it, leaving them stranded. Blanchet then blows up the nearby German camp. The Seventh Company is captured again by another German unit. Immobilized by the explosion, the four soldiers have to do their best to organize themselves so they can get moving again. But Duvauchel is captured by the Germans while Tassin, Chaudard, and Pithivier watch helplessly from the river they were swimming across to retrieve parts needed to repair the vehicle. Swept along by the current as they escape the enemy, our three heroes—Tassin, Chaudard, and Pithivier—are taken in wearing only their underwear by Mother Crouzy, who gives them French officers’ uniforms abandoned by their wearers during the debacle. Our three heroes are arrested again and taken to a château where a large part of the French high command is being held. The three hapless soldiers, now officers against their will, are regarded as heroes by the other officers, who hope they can escape with their help. Meanwhile, the Germans assign Pithivier and Tassin to fetch three cows from a French farm to feed the French officers. Though the task ends in utter failure, the farmer’s sister gives them a plan of the château’s underground passages so they can come spend the evening with her. However, the soldiers use the passages to help all the officers escape while their superior, Captain Dumont (Pierre Tornade), plays chess with the German officer. But, unfortunately, because Tassin carelessly shuts the door behind them as they leave the passages, the forest floor collapses along with the trees, blocking the exit and forcing the officers to turn back through the tunnels that connect to the château. As for the three soldiers, they finally find themselves free and steal a German motorcycle. But a few minutes later, they are caught in an explosion when Blanchet blows up a bridge, and they end up in hospital. Once recovered, they try unsuccessfully to escape from the hospital and are sent to repair the railway line that Blanchet had blown up earlier. The three dimwits escape again by train, despite Pithivier’s reluctance. They find themselves unexpectedly at the controls of the train. Tassin manages to uncouple the rear carriages to avoid being captured by the German soldiers aboard the train. But because of a blunder by Pithivier, the rear carriages gradually catch up with the locomotive. Fortunately, Blanchet blows up the railway viaduct, along with the carriages. Safe, our three heroes once again stumble upon the Seventh Company, which they plan to help escape again, under the astonished gaze of their superior, Captain Dumont, who cannot understand how these three dimwits keep escaping.
