An aging couple's summer at their lake cottage is transformed by the arrival of their estranged daughter's young son.

The story

Ethel and Norman Thayer, an aging couple, continue their annual summer tradition at their cottage on Golden Pond in northern New England. As Norman approaches his 80th birthday, he begins showing signs of dementia, which he copes with by frequently discussing aging and death. Their only child, Chelsea, visits with her fiancé Bill and his 13-year-old son, Billy. Before departing for a European vacation, Chelsea and Bill ask the Thayers to host Billy for a month. Initially annoyed by his elderly hosts, Billy eventually begins to form a bond with Norman through shared fishing adventures and reading.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Ethel and Norman Thayer spend their summer at a cottage on Golden Pond in northern New England. Norman, nearing 80, struggles with dementia and memory loss. Their daughter Chelsea, who lives in Los Angeles and feels estranged from her father, visits with her fiancé Bill and his son Billy. Chelsea asks the Thayers to watch Billy for a month while they vacation in Europe. Billy initially resents the elderly couple but grows fond of Norman, and the two become obsessed with catching a rival fish named 'Walter'. During a fishing trip, their boat crashes in Purgatory Cove; Norman is thrown overboard and injured, but Billy saves him. After healing, they catch and release 'Walter'. Chelsea returns to find her father has bonded with Billy and attempts a backflip to impress him, finally reconciling with Norman. On their final day, Norman suffers a heart attack but recovers briefly to say goodbye to the lake, noting that their offspring is grown and they are now alone.
