During World War II, British intelligence officers use a corpse and a fake identity to deceive the Nazis about the Allies' true intentions.

The story

During World War II, Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu, a Jewish barrister, remains in England while his family seeks safety in the United States. Montagu is appointed to the Twenty Committee and tasked with a high-stakes deception. To mislead the German military regarding the Allied invasion of Sicily, the British plan to plant false documents on a corpse, creating a fake identity for the deceased. Montagu and his colleagues must navigate the complexities of espionage, internal tensions, and the logistical hurdles of the operation while ensuring the deception remains intact to protect the lives of Allied soldiers.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu, a Jewish barrister, remains in England during World War II while his wife and children flee to the United States. Appointed to the Twenty Committee, Montagu works with Charles Cholmondeley and Ian Fleming to execute 'Operation Mincemeat.' The plan involves using the body of a deceased man, Glyndwr Michael, and giving him the fake identity of Major William Martin. They create a detailed backstory, including a fake fiancée, 'Pam,' and a collection of personal items to deceive the Germans into believing the Allies intend to invade Greece rather than Sicily. The operation faces hurdles, including a suspicious sister of the deceased and a tense relationship between Montagu and Cholmondeley. The body is transported to a submarine base and dropped into the sea, where it is eventually found by Spanish fishermen. Despite complications and a potential spy threat to a staff member, the deception succeeds. The Allied invasion of Sicily proceeds with limited casualties, and the German military is successfully misled. The film concludes with the fates of the main characters and the revelation of the real identity of the man who became 'Major William Martin.'
