At the end of World War II, a woman taken from her village to a forced-labor camp must learn to survive far from home.
The story
In December 1944, Soviet soldiers arrive in Szekcső, a Swabian village in southern Transdanubia, and take its able-bodied women away for what they claim will be three weeks of corn harvesting. Irén, whose husband is away at the front, leaves her parents and children behind believing she will be gone only briefly. Instead, the women are transported thousands of kilometers in cattle cars to a labor camp and forced to work in a coal mine. Amid brutal conditions, Irén meets Rajmund, who teaches her how to survive. Both have families waiting at home, even as an unusual, emotionally distant bond begins to grow between them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the end of World War II, in December 1944, in a Swabian village in southern Transdanubia—in the story, Szekcső in Tolna County—Soviet soldiers take the able-bodied women away for “a little work”: three weeks of harvesting corn. When Irén (Gera Marina), who is waiting for her husband to return from the front, and the other women leave their parents and children behind, she does not know that they will be gone for years instead of just a few days. The Soviets put them in cattle cars and transport them thousands of kilometers to a labor camp, where they are forced to work in a coal mine. In the brutal conditions, Irén meets Rajmund (Csányi Sándor), who teaches her how to survive hell. Meanwhile, a unique, emotionless bond develops between them, despite—or perhaps precisely because—both have families waiting for them at home.
