The story

Mika planned to spend her vacation in Paris with Fanny, but a troubling feeling about Ostwind and Kaltenbach sends her secretly back to the stable. She finds strange scratches on Ostwind and senses that her grandmother is concealing something. During a ride in the forest, Ostwind leads her to a mysterious gray mare. Mika then learns that her grandmother is broke and the riding stable may be lost, as many riders have moved to a more modern neighboring stable. When Fanny arrives, she and Mika join Sam in planning to compete in a tournament for prize money that could save Kaltenbach, though the event demands skills Mika does not yet have.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Mika had actually wanted to spend her vacation in Paris with Fanny, but she cannot shake the feeling that something is wrong with Ostwind or Kaltenbach. So she secretly sets off for Kaltenbach. There, she discovers that Ostwind has strange scratches on his body and that her grandmother is hiding something from her. While out walking in the forest with Ostwind, he suddenly trots off cross-country, and Mika struggles to keep up with him. Eventually, the two of them come across a mysterious gray mare in the forest, whom Ostwind seems to have fallen in love with. Back at Kaltenbach, Mika learns that her grandmother is broke and at risk of losing the riding stable. Many riders have by now moved to Leopold Sasse’s neighboring, more modern stable. He is also holding the Sasseclassics for the first time, an event he modeled on Maria’s. Then Fanny also turns up at Kaltenbach, because she did not want to travel to Paris without Mika. Eventually, Mika, Sam, and Fanny come up with a plan to compete in the tournament and save Kaltenbach with the substantial prize money. The problem is that the tournament is an eventing competition, requiring dressage as well as show jumping and cross-country riding. In the forest, Mika meets the gray mare again, as well as a young man named Milan. Milan is trying to catch the horse, 33, again for its owner. He also knows a lot about riding, so the two make a deal: Mika will help Milan catch the horse, and Milan will teach Mika dressage. Herr Kaan and Fanny help Mika, too. Eventually, Mika and Milan manage to catch the horse, and Milan intends to take it to its owner, Unger, but changes his mind at the last second and flees from Unger instead. Mika competes in the Sasseclassics, but does things her own way, without a saddle or bridle, and gets top scores. During a later training ride, Mika suffers a severe concussion when she is not paying attention and is knocked off her horse by a low-hanging branch. The next day, still dazed, she takes part in the cross-country event. In the end, Ostwind carries Mika unconscious across the finish line. Because of her condition, Mika has to withdraw from the tournament and can no longer compete in show jumping. Milan is briefly arrested, and 33 is taken to Unger. Once Milan is released, he decides with Mika, Fanny, and Sam to save 33. In the end, the four of them rescue not only 33 but also two dozen other horses. The police then arrest Unger for keeping the animals in improper conditions, and Leopold Sasse, who had sold horses to Unger, also gets into trouble. Some of the horses are then taken to Kaltenbach to be cared for, which saves the stable for the time being. 33 is given the new name 34. Mika and Milan become a couple, as do Fanny and Sam.
