The story
Kaltenbach has become a therapy center, where Mika works with troubled horses and their owners. After discovering a brand on Ostwind, she and Milan learn that the horse comes from Ora. Mika secretly travels to Andalusia and finds the Ora Ranch, where she is mistaken for a new assistant. The ranch is run by Pedro and his daughter Sam; Mika also meets Pedro’s sister Tara, who cares for a herd of wild horses. Pedro has sold the Ora spring, the herd’s water source, to the town, which plans to extract and sell the water. As Fanny and Sam from Kaltenbach arrive, Mika and the others consider how to protect the spring.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Kaltenbach has by now become a therapy center, and Mika works with troubled horses and their owners. Mika discovers a brand on Ostwind and, with Milan’s help, also finds out where Ostwind comes from. One night, Mika slips away from Kaltenbach and heads for Andalusia to find Ora, the place where Ostwind comes from. After a long journey, she finds the Ora Ranch, where the owners initially mistake her for their new assistant, Sonja. The ranch is run by Pedro and his daughter Sam, and Mika also meets Pedro’s sister Tara. Tara looks after a herd of wild horses. From time to time, Pedro captures some of the stallions and sells them so the horses won’t multiply too much. Ostwind is one of those captured stallions. Pedro and Tara are at odds because they have different views on how horses should be treated. Pedro is in financial trouble and has sold the Ora spring—the water source for the wild horses—back to the town, assuming the horses would still be able to use it. But the town wants to extract and sell the water. Soon, Fanny also arrives at the Ora Ranch and is likewise mistaken for Sonja. A little later, Sam from Kaltenbach shows up too. Mika, Fanny, and the two Sams then consider how they can save the Ora spring. Fanny discovers that cultural events and the places where they take place can be placed under protection. Mika remembers the legendary Race of Ora, and the four of them decide to revive it. They advertise the event and sell tickets, and just enough people attend for the protection to take effect, meaning the spring cannot be commercially exploited. The Race of Ora takes place, and Ostwind competes too—but without Mika, because she feels it is his race and that he should run it on his own. Ostwind wins, and Pedro and Tara make up. Then it is time for Mika and the others to return to Kaltenbach. After Fanny and Sam have already gone on ahead, Mika says goodbye to Pedro and Sam, and finally to Tara as well. While with Tara, Mika makes the heartbreaking decision to set Ostwind free and let him live with his herd, in his home. Mika returns to Kaltenbach without Ostwind, shortly after he has become a father, as 34 has given birth to a foal they had together. The foal is very weak, and Mika helps nurse it back to health. Finally, she and Milan name the foal Ora.
