The story
Joanna Mintz Stayton, a wealthy and snobbish socialite, is vacationing on the Oregon Coast when she falls off her yacht and develops temporary amnesia. She is rescued and taken in by Dean Proffitt, a hardworking carpenter whom she had previously mistreated and refused to pay for his work. While her identity remains a secret to the local community, she begins to live as part of Dean's large, working-class family. As she navigates her new life, she must balance her old habits with the realities of her new surroundings while her husband, Grant, searches for her.

Joanna Mintz Stayton, a wealthy socialite, is vacationing in a fishing village when she falls off her yacht and suffers from amnesia. She is taken in by Dean Proffitt, a carpenter she had previously mistreated. Dean, wanting to keep her from being alone, tells the community she is his wife. While living with him, Joanna learns about his struggles and helps him manage his household and business. Her husband, Grant, eventually finds her but doesn't realize she has changed. After her memory is restored upon seeing him, she realizes she prefers the life she shared with Dean. She eventually rejects Grant and returns to the village to be with Dean and his sons, ultimately revealing that the yacht and wealth are hers alone.
