The story
In Taranto in 1997, factory worker Caterino Lamanna lives on a run-down farmstead whose fortunes have declined because of its proximity to the steelworks. He is about to marry Anna, and they share a dream of moving to the city. Company executives decide to make him an informant tasked with identifying workers they would be better off getting rid of. Caterino begins following his colleagues so he can report them. Unaware of how grim the conditions are, he asks to be assigned to Palazzina LAF, an Ilva department used as a prison-like holding area for “inconvenient” employees.

Taranto, 1997. Factory worker Caterino Lamanna lives on a run-down farmstead, its fortunes diminished by its proximity to the steelworks, and is about to marry Anna, with whom he shares the dream of moving to the city. When company executives decide to turn him into an informant to identify workers they would be better off getting rid of, Caterino begins tailing his colleagues so he can report them. Soon, unaware of how grim the conditions are, he asks to be assigned to the Palazzina LAF as well (an abbreviation for cold-rolling mill), the Ilva department that serves as a prison-like holding area for “inconvenient” employees. It is there that Caterino discovers that what he thought was paradise is actually hell.
