Glahn wanders about with his dog Æsop as his only companion. On one of his excursions, he meets the merchant Mack and his daughter Edvarda. Later, the lieutenant meets her again and spends an intense period with her. It is not long before the strange, impulsive Edvarda nearly drives Thomas mad. When Edvarda leaves him, he seeks comfort with Eva, the blacksmith’s wife, whom Mack also has his eye on. Out of jealousy, Mack arranges an accident, and Eva dies. Glahn goes to the city, where he throws himself into a wild life of alcohol and scandal. He also seeks to leave the military. Years pass, and Glahn goes on a hunting trip with a companion. The memory of Edvarda still haunts him, and he sees no other way out than to die. He asks his hunting companion to “make a bad shot” and put a bullet in his throat. At last, Glahn gets his wish when his companion one day shoots him dead.
