The story
Grégoire Jeancourt, a wealthy business executive, is released after four months in detention at La Santé prison for financial misconduct. His imprisonment has unsettled his dealings with others, leaving him largely silent and detached as he struggles to find his bearings at home and at work. His relationship with his wife, Agnès, remains icy, while conflict with his brother Louis, a famous television host, is sharpened by the settlement of their father’s estate. Grégoire tries to connect with people outside his privileged world, including his wife’s hairdresser, a former prisoner he encounters in Paris, and various employees, but cannot manage a genuine exchange.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Grégoire Jeancourt, a wealthy business executive, is released after four months in detention at La Santé prison for financial misconduct. His imprisonment seems to have deeply unsettled him in his dealings with others, and he can no longer find his bearings either in his family or at work. Absent and largely silent, he watches the world around him with detachment and benevolence. His icy relationship with his wife, Agnès, does not improve; things remain just as conflictual with his brother Louis, a famous television host, especially since the settlement of their father’s estate. Although he tries to make contact with people from less privileged social backgrounds than his own—Stéphanie, his wife’s hairdresser; William, a former prisoner whom he runs into by chance in Paris; and various employees—he fails to establish a connection or have a genuine exchange with them. He remains a stranger to everyone and to himself, until one day, during a heated family gathering, certain truths come to light, bringing the two brothers closer and enabling them at last to admit their mutual affection.
