A detached philosophy professor and a vivacious hairdresser discover each other’s worlds as an unlikely romance takes shape.

The story

Clément, a philosophy professor and essayist, is appointed to a high school in Arras, a posting he sees as an exile from Paris. He stays in a hotel during his three teaching days and returns to the capital whenever he can. There he meets Jennifer, a young single mother who works in a hair salon and enjoys karaoke contests with her girlfriends. Though Clément is detached and reluctant to commit, the two begin a love affair. Their contrasting backgrounds and interests bring them into one another’s worlds: he reads Kant aloud, while she takes him to films and dancing. As they grow closer, each discovers that the other may be more complicated than first assumed.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Clément, a philosophy professor and essayist, is appointed to a high school in Arras. But for him, there is no salvation outside the Latin Quarter, and he regards this enforced exile as purgatory. He meets Jennifer, a young single mother who works in a hair salon. Her work means a great deal to her, as do her girlfriends, with whom she takes part in karaoke contests. Clément stays in a hotel during his three days of teaching in Arras, returning to Paris whenever he can. A bachelor not inclined to commit to a relationship, he embarks on a love affair with Jennifer. Clément is a cool, detached philosopher who has theorized about love, and whom feelings seem unable to touch. Jennifer is a vivacious blonde, a fan of celebrity magazines and karaoke. Despite their different social backgrounds, they are mutually attracted, each discovering the other’s world: one reading Kant aloud, the other taking him to see films starring Jennifer Aniston and to dance at a nightclub. One is more perceptive than she lets on, and the other is not as insensitive as he thinks. But although Clément is a great theorist of romantic relationships, in practice it is the proud Jennifer who will decide the future of their love.
