Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story begins with the sentencing of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a murderer, told in flashback. Born in a fish market, he is raised in an orphanage where he develops a superhuman sense of smell. After a tragic incident involving a plum seller, he becomes obsessed with her scent. He eventually finds a mentor, the perfumer Giuseppe Baldini, who teaches him to create fragrances. After Baldini's death, Grenouille travels to Grasse to find the 'thirteenth scent'—the essence of a woman. He begins a killing spree of young women to capture their scents, eventually targeting the wealthy Laure Richis. After capturing her scent, he is captured by soldiers. On the day of his execution, he applies his finished perfume, causing a mass hallucination and orgy among the crowd. He is declared innocent and then later abandoned by the crowd. Ultimately, he returns to his birthplace, pours the perfume over his head, and is lost in a crowd of people overwhelmed by the scent.
