The story
One evening, Peter and Anneliese are visited by Mr. Sumsemann, a cockchafer who has lost one of his six legs on the Moon. The children set out with him on a journey there. Along the way, they encounter anthropomorphic elemental spirits and mythical figures, including the Sandman, the Lightning Witch, and Santa Claus. Their adventure takes them through the Milky Way toward the Moon, where they hope to help Mr. Sumsemann recover what he lost.

One evening, the children Peter and Anneliese are visited by a cockchafer named Mr. Sumsemann. Since Mr. Sumsemann lost one of his six legs on the Moon, the children accompany him on his journey there. Along the way, the three encounter numerous anthropomorphic elemental spirits and mythical figures, including the Sandman, the Lightning Witch, and Santa Claus. After an adventurous journey through the Milky Way, they finally defeat the Man in the Moon and are able to give Mr. Sumsemann back his missing leg. They fly back to Earth with the cockchafer and find themselves in their beds just as their mother comes to wake them up.
