The story

Damouré runs the Petit à petit import-export company in Ayorou, Niger, with Lam and Illo. When he decides to build a “big building” in his village, he travels to Paris to find out how people live in multi-story houses. There, he encounters Parisian ways of living and thinking that strike him as curious, and he regularly sends accounts of his observations to his companions in letters he describes as “Persian Letters.” His reports eventually leave Lam and Illo convinced that something is wrong with him. They send Lam to Paris to join Damouré and see the situation for himself.
