Full plot (contains spoilers)
Thirteen-year-old Pauline, known as Pik, has lived with her grandmother Wischonka since her mother’s death. Pik has never met her father. Her grandmother runs an animal boarding kennel that is on the verge of bankruptcy because many customers left their animals there using false addresses. Pik wants to help her grandmother, so she tries to raise money by singing at Cologne Airport. But airport police take her away. She initially manages to escape from them, but in the process she happens to see the corrupt police officer Kowatsch and a customs officer making off with confiscated drugs. Kowatsch realizes he has been spotted, but he cannot catch Pik. While fleeing the police, Pik spontaneously pretends to be a French exchange student, which leads her to the home of the wealthy opera diva Ida Königstein. The way of life Pik encounters there is very different from what she is used to. At first, she reassures her grandmother over the phone with excuses, while enjoying life with the Königsteins. Amadeus Königstein, who is about her age, is not pleased to have her around because he feels she is disrupting his piano practice. Meanwhile, police officer Kowatsch gets on Pik’s trail. She has to flee again and steals a car belonging to the Königsteins. She manages to drive back to her grandmother Wischonka’s animal boarding kennel. But Amadeus had noticed what she was planning and hidden in the car because he has fallen in love with her over the past few days. So now she has to explain everything to him. When the Königsteins realize that their son is missing that evening, they suspect he has been kidnapped. This gives the children the idea of faking their own kidnapping to get money to save the animal boarding kennel. Although the ransom handover fails, the two manage to trap Kowatsch and the customs officer, and they are arrested. Pik then supports Amadeus when he takes part in a piano competition. She encourages him to play what he loves most, rather than what his mother wants him to play. Amadeus wins the competition—and Pik’s heart.
