In 1990s upstate New York, Lucas Brennan, a plainclothes police officer, conducts undercover sting operations targeting gay and bisexual men in shopping malls. While the work is routine, it troubles Lucas, who is struggling with his own attraction to men and the recent death of his father. During an operation, he meets Andrew Waters, a married pastor. Lucas uses the name 'Gus' to initiate a secret affair with Andrew. When Andrew learns Lucas is a police officer, he cuts off contact. Lucas later tracks Andrew down to his church and confronts him, outting him in front of his family. Following this, Lucas becomes isolated and writes unsent letters to Andrew. At a New Year's party, Lucas's mother and uncle find a letter from Andrew. A misunderstanding about the letter's intended recipient leads to a heated argument between Lucas and his uncle, Paul. The confrontation turns physical, and Lucas shoves Paul out a window in front of the guests. In the aftermath, Lucas tearfully reveals the truth of the letter to his mother, finally coming out to her.
