An eleven-year-old aspiring filmmaker turns his camera toward his family when his work-from-home father’s unexplained absences spark his curiosity.
The story
After getting the video camera he wanted for his eleventh birthday, Tomáš grows more determined to become a filmmaker and begins recording his family, friends and first love. He also dreams of a seaside holiday, preferably with his Croatian friend Haris. Because his father works from home, Tomáš is unsure what he does for a living, so he hides the camera in his father’s office. He discovers that his father leaves the house for a while every Tuesday and Thursday. When asked about it, his father refuses to discuss it. Curious and worried that his father may be meeting another woman, Tomáš sets out to uncover the reason for his absences.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After Tomáš receives the video camera he has long wanted for his eleventh birthday, his determination to pursue a career as a filmmaker grows stronger; his great role model is film director Miloš Forman. He starts filming his family in almost every situation, as well as his friends and Stáňa, his first great love. Another heartfelt wish of Tomáš’s is to go on holiday by the sea someday, preferably with his friend Haris, who is from Croatia. Since the boy cannot really picture what his father does for a living, as he works from home, Tomáš hides his camera in his father’s office. This allows him to discover that his father leaves the house for a while every Tuesday and Thursday. When Tomáš asks him about it, his father refuses to discuss it. This arouses the boy’s curiosity, and he sets out to find out why his father reacts that way, driven also by the fear that his father might be meeting another woman. With his camera, he starts following the trail to uncover his father’s secret. When Haris asks Tomáš to lend him his camera for a short time, Tomáš agrees. Haris then shows him what things are often like at his home and sadly tells him that his father is very violent and even hits his mother in particular, causing great suffering for Haris and his brother. The boys decide together to do something to change this unbearable situation. But the father’s secret is revealed, too: he dreams of Tomáš becoming a regular player for the local football club and perhaps one day a famous footballer. He himself takes advantage of Tomáš’s regular training sessions, which is also why he secretly leaves his computer workstation in the family home for a few hours on a regular basis.
