A retired inspector running his village inn is drawn back into a suspicious death investigation when a body turns up in a friend’s vineyard.

The story

Former gendarmerie inspector Simon Polt has left the service and now runs his home village’s inn for an association. He has little contact with the police, apart from his friend Norbert Sailer, an officer. Their routine changes when they discover a dead man in Sailer’s vineyard. The death appears to be suicide, but Polt is unconvinced, and suspicion even falls on him. The deceased is a Munich wine merchant who regularly bought wine in the area, though nobody initially admits to knowing him. Meanwhile, the village school is threatened with closure, and Polt’s girlfriend Karin is offered a headteacher’s post far away.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Former gendarmerie inspector Simon Polt quit the service of his own accord and now runs his home village’s inn on behalf of an association. Apart from his friend Norbert Sailer, a police officer, he has no contact with the police anymore. That changes when he and Sailer find a dead man in Sailer’s vineyard. Everything points to suicide, but Polt has his doubts. At first, Polt himself even comes under suspicion. The dead man is a wine merchant from Munich who regularly buys wine in the area, though at first nobody claims to have known him. In fact, the murdered man is well known not only to the winegrowers but especially to their wives, and people in the village attribute quite a few paternities to him. There are difficulties in Polt’s personal life as well: the village school is to be closed, and his girlfriend Karin is offered a headteacher’s position a long way away.
