When a mix-up sends a bag of company takings on a hotel-bound delivery route, Vivi races to recover it before the money—and her job—are lost.
The story
Vivi, an employee at a Munich furniture store, is taking the day’s 17,000-mark takings to the bank when she asks her friend Bea to make the deposit. Distracted by her boyfriend Bob, Bea leaves with the money but forgets to bank it; the bag slips between a bed and its frame in the store’s warehouse. The bed is soon sent with a delivery to a hotel in Austria, and Vivi follows with Bea in hopes of finding the missing cash. Their search brings them into contact with hotel staff and guests, while Vivi fears the consequences of her mistake at work.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Vivi, an employee at the “kika” furniture store, cycles through Munich to take the day’s takings, amounting to 17,000 marks, to the bank shortly before it closes. Near the bank she meets her friend Bea, whose soon-to-be-ex boyfriend is sitting in the café opposite. Vivi is supposed to break the news to him that their relationship is over. In exchange, Bea agrees to take the yellow bag containing the large sum of money to the bank. She is just about to go in when her new guy, Bob, pulls up in a canary-yellow VW Beetle convertible and starts honking wildly. Bea forgets all about making the deposit and promptly jumps into Bob’s car with the day’s takings. Bob works as a warehouse manager at that very furniture store, where junior boss Bobby Hansen has temporarily taken over the running of the business that day while the actual boss, the elderly Hansen, enjoys the two-week company holiday. Before leaving, he still has to calm an angry customer over the phone: Margot Zavattini, a hotelier’s wife who has not yet received her bed delivery. Bea, who is as blonde as she is a little dim, believes her guy Bob is the furniture-store owner’s son. The two plan to spend some intimate time together in the furniture warehouse, in one of the very beds that Mrs. Zavattini has angrily demanded be delivered. As Bea undresses, Bob carelessly tosses the bag of company money aside, and it slips down between the bed and its frame. Meanwhile, the real junior boss is ordered to personally deliver the beds to the Zavattini Hotel on Lake Wörthersee. Bobby Hansen loads six beds, along with two more ordered near Velden, into a furniture-store delivery van. When Vivi finds out what has happened, she rushes to the warehouse with Bea and her lover, but the bed in question is already on its way to Austria. Vivi and Bea follow by train and meet Jonny, a fat, perennial bachelor, during the journey. He is supposed to start work as a disc jockey at the Zavattini Hotel. But when Yvonne, the hotelier Alexander Zavattini’s mistress, unexpectedly arrives, he hastily passes her off to his wife as a disc jockey sent by the employment office. As a result, Jonny gets only a job as a temporary waiter, which he performs with the greatest possible clumsiness. Jonny pursues the two attractive women from the train; Mrs. Zavattini enjoys herself with Otto Bronsky, a rough-mannered hotel guest from Berlin; and the hotelier is happy to let himself be charmed by Yvonne, who regularly “ambushes” him in the nude. The cook, Fredy, and Sandra, a local traffic warden, begin an affair in the hotel disco. Meanwhile, Pamela, the buxom chambermaid, has her eye on the portly Jonny, who is not quite willing to go along with her. The real junior boss, Bobby, is staying at the hotel too. He immediately takes a liking to Vivi, whom he has never met before and who therefore does not recognize him either. She takes him for a delivery driver. Vivi tells Bobby about her mishap and her fear that her boss, the elderly Hansen, will fire her. After the six delivered beds have been searched, they move on to number seven, at a nearby convent. Disguised as nuns, Vivi, Jonny, and Bobby search there too, but find no money. Bed number eight is at the Klagenfurt hospital. Bobby and Vivi, who have by now fallen in love with each other, along with Bea, search the hospital rooms. In one of them, an elderly man who is seriously ill is holding a yellow bag. Believing they have finally found the money, the friends rush out of the hospital with the bag, only to discover that the old man had hidden nothing but a smoked sausage in it—his secret snack. A little later, the patient finds the yellow bag they are looking for and thinks it is his snack. But it contains 17,000 marks. The desperately ill old man could use the money to pay for the operation he urgently needs, which now seems within reach. Although Vivi risks losing her job and worse, she decides to let the old man keep the money after reading in the newspaper about the discovery and his medical history. Bobby is deeply impressed. He reveals to Vivi that he is the junior boss of the kika furniture company. When the elderly Hansen also turns up in Velden, Bob Fischer—the fake junior boss, who has arrived earlier—has to admit to his girlfriend Bea that he had been boasting. But she stands by him, and Bobby Hansen and Vivi also become a couple.
