The story
Diane Clovier, a 41-year-old executive at a small publishing house in Paris, is also a devoted mother and leads an uneventful life. That changes when she meets Emilio, a handsome young Italian who works for a humanitarian organization. Their meeting sparks an intense attraction, and Diane begins neglecting her job and lying to people around her in order to pursue the relationship. The story’s initial conflict lies in the gulf between Diane’s all-consuming passion and Emilio’s less committed view: for him, the relationship is simply another affair.
