A newly wealthy Italian family tries to turn its hometown into an independent state, triggering a chaotic clash over money, politics, and family secrets.

The story

After believing they have become poor again, the Tucci family is relieved when Kevi tells his grandmother Nicoletta that their money is safe in the bank and has even grown. The newly confirmed fortune inspires plans for a fried-food shop, but Tamara offers a far grander idea: making their hometown, Torresecca, an independent state. The family embraces the scheme, planning to leave Italy and stop paying taxes. As their new political venture takes shape, family and personal complications arise, including a young woman claiming to be Danilo’s daughter and Marcello’s concerns about his wife Valentina’s father.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Tucci family, having become poor again, is about to say goodbye to their beloved grandmother Nicoletta, who has been struck by a serious illness. However, Kevi tells his grandmother that he and the butler Gustavo made up the story about the scam and put their money in the bank, where it has even grown, and the elderly woman recovers and cries out with joy. The Tuccis discover that they are still rich and initially decide to open a fried-food shop, but they later accept Tamara’s proposal to make Torresecca an independent state. The Tuccis therefore make plans to leave Italy and stop paying taxes. The idea works, and Torresecca officially secedes from Italy, with Danilo as Prince and Marcello as Prime Minister. Marcello’s wife, Valentina, is about to have a baby. At the celebration marking Torresecca’s departure from Italy, Loredana meets Rudy, a man who shows immediate interest in her. Meanwhile, Danilo meets Chloe, a young woman who says she is his daughter, but he thinks it is just a joke. The next morning, Valentina introduces Marcello to her father, Libero, an ex-convict who hates Romans. That same evening, Marcello catches Libero on his cell phone and thinks he is planning to rob the Tuccis’ home. The Tuccis have decided to move into a castle, so Marcello follows Libero as he exchanges money with some men at a bar. There, Danilo meets the young woman who says she is his daughter, and Marcello sees them. After she leaves, Danilo explains everything to Marcello and begs him not to tell Loredana. Marcello advises Danilo to take a DNA test to find out whether the young woman really is his daughter, and the test comes back positive. That same day, the Tuccis decide to replace the euro with the old lire, an idea put forward by grandmother Nicoletta, now the Queen Mother. The change is to take place at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, the Italian Prime Minister and Danilo argue and fight on television, while Loredana, angry about Chloe, goes to her admirer Rudy, where they engage in erotic games before she falls asleep. The next morning, Loredana returns to the castle and, irritated, discovers that Chloe has been invited by her father to move in. At the next meeting, they decide to hold a Christmas party at the Tuccis’ castle and invite all the European nobles. For the occasion, Loredana dresses up in a gaudy costume like Cinderella’s stepmother and locks Chloe in the dungeons. Gustavo frees Chloe, however, and her father honors her during the festivities. Loredana writes Danilo a letter about their original values, almost explicitly saying that she is cheating on him, then goes to Rudy’s estate. There, she overhears him speaking badly about her to two of his friends, who have come to take part in the sexual encounter, and decides to take revenge by whipping them severely. Danilo, Marcello, and Libero are threatened by two Kazakh henchmen sent by one of Libero’s former business partners, and are forced to retrieve a painting. The first two disguise themselves as Santa Claus and an elf and retrieve it, but when they return, Valentina asks where they have been. On New Year’s Eve, the Italian Prime Minister cuts off Sky Sport to the people of Torresecca in order to bring Danilo Tucci down, prompting them to protest outside the castle. Valentina goes into labor and her father takes her to the hospital, while Danilo delivers his end-of-year speech and resigns as head of state, proposing that Torresecca rejoin Italy and that his enormous fortune be divided among all the families of Torresecca. The women in his family, especially his mother-in-law, become furious at this decision. However, Kevi is interrupted by his father during the speech, and manages to tell him that someone has transferred 112 million euros out of the Tuccis’ account. Valentina gives birth, first assisted by Libero and then by Marcello, and she and Marcello decide to name their daughter Martina. Chloe is blamed for the transfer, and her furious family catches up with her at the airport boarding gate. She reveals that Gustavo helped her, and that they have become engaged; she is not actually Danilo’s illegitimate daughter, having used a glass Tamara had drunk from for the DNA test. Kevi discovers that Gustavo’s transaction was made in lire, so they have lost almost none of their money: the entire 216 billion lire remains with the Tucci family. Chloe leaves Gustavo, who is partially forgiven and beaten. In the end, the Tuccis rebel against the Brexit wave and the old lire, which are to be abolished and replaced once again by the euro, while Torresecca returns to Italy and its families receive all their money (much to the Tuccis’ dismay). Finally, they—including Libero—found McTucci, a fast-food restaurant specializing in supplì.
