Full plot (contains spoilers)

Martin Vail, a high-profile Chicago defense attorney, takes on the case of Aaron Stampler, an altar boy accused of murdering a Catholic bishop. While the prosecution seeks the death penalty, Vail discovers that the bishop was involved in a scandalous situation involving several youths. During the trial, Vail uncovers evidence of the bishop's sexual predation. He intentionally triggers a shift in Aaron's personality, revealing a violent persona named 'Roy' who admits to the crime. Vail then maneuvers the court into a bench trial for an insanity plea. In a final twist, it is revealed that 'Roy' was not a separate personality, but the true persona of Aaron, who had been feigning amnesia and a split personality to manipulate the legal proceedings. Vail realizes the boy was fully aware of his actions all along, leaving the attorney stunned by the realization that his client was a calculating predator.
