Full plot (contains spoilers)

Else von Wimpfen, the daughter of a general and sister of Lieutenant Erik, is engaged to Lieutenant Alexis, a military adviser serving at the embassy of a neighboring country. When war is declared against that country, the two fiancés must part, and Else gives Alexis a carrier pigeon. Through it, when war breaks out, Alexis manages to send Else important news about the actions of a traitor who endangers the lives of both Else’s father and her fiancé. The two armies—one led by General Wimpfen and his son, and the other by Alexis himself—are facing one another. Thanks to this, Else, now a Red Cross nurse, takes a direct part in planning military operations alongside her brother, in an effort to keep both her father and her fiancé alive. Despite the traitor’s further acts of sabotage, final victory goes to General von Wimpfen’s country. Alexis is initially believed dead, but by the end of the war, recovering from his wounds and welcomed back into the von Wimpfens’ home, he is recognized as a brave and honest fighter, and as a worthy companion for Else.
