When the smugglers mistake Petersen for a spy, they tell Fyrtårnet and Bivognen to keep watch over him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Out at sea lies a rocky island. Professor Petersen arrives there to study the birdlife, but some bathing ladies disturb him, so he heads farther inland. This brings him to the hideout of the smuggler Jørgen, an empty barn where the smugglers gather. Among them are Fyrtårnet and Bivognen, who are uncomfortable in this company and are there only against their will. The smugglers mistake the professor for a spy and tell Fyrtårnet and Bivognen to keep watch over him. Instead, they help him escape, and all three leave the island by boat. Grateful to his rescuers, the professor now takes Fyrtårnet and Bivognen into his home as his two foster children.
