A newly hired waitress sets out to revive a Bavarian village inn, upsetting the balance between its men and women.

The story

The Post Inn in Oberkreuzberg is deserted when Irene Lenz, fresh from hotel school, takes a job as waitress for innkeeper Martin Oberhauser. Determined to revive the business, she invites villagers for an evening and offers free meals to the first ten guests; the inn soon fills. Among those attending are numerous village men, maid Annemarie and farmhand Sepp from Sonntalerhof, and Mayor Weinberger, who watches his daughter Christel closely ahead of the mayoral election. The evening succeeds for the inn, but the women are angry about their drunken husbands, while Martin dislikes Irene’s flirting with guests.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Post Inn in the Bavarian village of Oberkreuzberg is deserted when Irene Lenz arrives, fresh from hotel school. Innkeeper Martin Oberhauser has hired her as the new waitress. The attractive young woman decides to turn the inn around and invites the villagers to come that evening, offering free meals to the first ten guests. By evening, the inn is full. Among the guests, alongside numerous men from the village, are maid Annemarie and farmhand Sepp from Sonntalerhof, as well as Mayor Weinberger, who is keeping a particularly close eye on his daughter Christel shortly before the mayoral election. She is having affairs with three young men from the village, but is supposed to abstain until the election. The evening is a success for the inn. The women, however, are furious with their drunken husbands, and Martin dislikes how much Irene flirts with the guests. The new farmer at Sonntalerhof, Maximilian Sonntaler, turns out to be an ignorant city-dweller. He clumsily tries to seduce Annemarie, but she rejects him. Later, he flirts with Steffi and Fricki, only to end up spending the night with Josefin, Sepp’s girlfriend. Meanwhile, the embittered shopkeeper Kreszentia, whom Xaver is courting only half-heartedly, plots with the village women to revolt against the inn. When they storm it armed with pitchforks and other things, the men have already made their escape through the back door. Maximilian, too, discovers that the village women are not to be trifled with: Josefin, Steffi, and Fricki chase him, and he takes refuge with Annemarie. She, however, turns down his marriage proposal. The local women stay away from a dance evening Irene organizes at the inn, but enough women from the surrounding villages come to dance. When the men try to return home that evening, their wives have locked them out. As they go courting at the windows, some misunderstandings arise because the rooms have been reassigned. Eventually, the women gather at Xaver’s new sauna, where men from neighboring villages have also been invited. The husbands from Oberkreuzberg are outraged and march into the sauna, but the women make it clear that they are simply spending their evening just as extravagantly as the men spend theirs at the inn. The women are bothered, however, that their leader, Kreszentia, has stayed away from the sauna. It turns out that the strict, moralistic woman spent the night with Xaver. They marry shortly afterward, and after the celebration Kreszentia is visited by her illegitimate son, causing a stir. Meanwhile, more couples have formed: Irene and Martin, Maximilian and Annemarie, and Sepp and Josefin.
