A detective and his estranged foster brother reunite to find a missing IT technician amid a murder investigation and an election campaign.
The story
Florian “Flo” Kienzl, now a detective, is asked to find Oleg Kutsenko, an IT technician who has disappeared. Oleg’s lover, Marissa, is worried, and Oleg’s employer, former footballer and pig farmer Benny Jagschitz, is leading in an approaching mayoral election. Flo’s investigation reunites him with his foster brother Eddi, recently released from prison on probation and determined to make a new life with his pregnant partner, Eleni. When Oleg’s assistant Britney is murdered, Flo becomes a suspect and is temporarily arrested by his former partner, police officer Melanie Hauser. Flo then pressures Eddi into helping him locate Oleg, whose disappearance is tied to a locked company server and an unusual demand.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Florian “Flo” Kienzl, Edgar “Eddi” Kovac, and Samira Leoni grew up together at the Krutzlerheim. Flo later became a police officer and now works as a detective, while his foster brother Eddi has been released from prison on probation. Eddi was sentenced to 18 months for burglary and property damage at the home of former professional footballer and pig farmer Benny Jagschitz. Eddi’s probation officer, Eleni Papatopoulos, is eight months pregnant with his child. The mayoral election in Graz is approaching, and Jagschitz is leading in the polls. Oleg Kutsenko is an IT technician working for Jagschitz, and has gone missing, much to the concern of his lover, Marissa Atzler, Miss Leibnitz 2012. Flo is supposed to track Oleg down for Marissa. Soon afterward, Oleg’s assistant Britney is murdered. Police officer Melanie “Meli” Hauser, who used to be in a relationship with Flo, temporarily arrests him as a suspect. At the police station, Flo and Eddi unexpectedly run into each other after a long time apart. Eddi is trying to build a new life with Eleni and would really rather have nothing more to do with Flo. However, Flo threatens to report his future mother-in-law Olympia’s restaurant to the food authorities. Eddi is to help Flo find Oleg. Later, Oleg himself contacts the two of them by phone. According to Jagschitz’s Russian adviser Ludmilla, Oleg had changed some passwords and also has a ransomware key; every day the company’s server remains locked costs Jagschitz’s business 100,000 euros. In exchange for the ransomware key, Oleg demands over the phone that Flo retrieve his Nola 2 Red Scorpion sneakers from his office. The exchange is to take place in an airport hangar. Chief Inspector “Bam Bam” Bammer is friends with Benny Jagschitz and has so far covered up his illegal activities. But he no longer wants to cover up the murder of Britney by Jagschitz’s Mexican bodyguard, Nacho. Jagschitz, however, claims he had nothing to do with it. Ludmilla demands 150,000 euros from Jagschitz. The Russians originally came to him to circumvent the sanctions against Russia. But because of the ransomware, they are no longer making any money. The Krutzlerheim now belongs to businessman Nogger, who is financially backing Jagschitz’s election campaign. Nogger wants 7,500 euros for the red sneakers Oleg asked for. Oleg wants to meet his girlfriend Marissa at the airport, by Benny’s Pulled Pork container. A memory card containing a video of Samira Leoni, who later became a prosecutor, was hidden in the sneakers. Oleg needs the video as insurance against Jagschitz. Samira had investigated Jagschitz, and Eddi had helped her. One night, Samira disappeared. At the request of his business partner Jagschitz, Nogger wants Eddi to plant the murder weapon from Britney’s killing on Flo as evidence, in exchange for the red sneakers. Flo is arrested by the police again. Hauser, however, is convinced Flo is innocent and lets him go. In Oleg’s office, Flo and Eddi find the memory card containing footage of Samira. Marissa also tells them what Samira, who had worked for Jagschitz and Nogger, had discovered. After Eddi unlocks the servers that had been locked by ransomware, the Russians receive an alert. The governor of Smolensk chats with Eddi, who tells him that Jagschitz is subletting his servers. The Russians lock the servers and presumably erase them remotely. A shot goes off from Nacho’s gun, and Eddi is taken to hospital with an injury. Jagschitz and Ludmilla are arrested by the police. Meli quits the police because she no longer wants to help her superior Bammer’s friends. Eddi is discharged from hospital and becomes a father. To their surprise, Samira turns up at Eddi and Flo’s and threatens them with a gun.
