The story
Police officer Kurt Wallander defies his boss to trace the source of unusually strong heroin after his goddaughter dies of an overdose.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film takes place in the middle of winter in Ystad, and the main character is the middle-aged police officer Kurt Wallander, who this time is investigating a drug-trafficking ring. It begins when his own goddaughter, Eva, is found dead after taking an overdose. It turns out that the heroin is unusually strong, and Kurt begins searching for those behind the drugs. But he has a major problem: his boss will not let him look for the person he suspects sold the new heroin. Instead, she wants them to look for another drug dealer named Yngve Holm. But Kurt defies his boss’s orders and goes to Malmö again and again to try to solve the case. Eventually, he gets hold of the person he suspected. He takes some photographs of him and shows them to Emma, a friend of his goddaughter’s who has been a drug dealer. She takes Kurt to a friend who says he has seen the man. The man in the photograph is named Heinrich Böle. Wallander thinks he recognises Böle from an earlier murder of his goddaughter’s mother, in which the perpetrator was never found.
