The story
Set in London in 1965, the film follows Jimmy Cooper, a young mod who feels trapped in a dull post-room job. To cope with his teenage angst, Jimmy spends his time partying, riding scooters, and brawling with rockers alongside his friends. The tension between the two subcultures escalates when the group travels to the seaside town of Brighton for a bank holiday weekend. Seeking to establish himself as a 'face' and win the attention of a girl he has a crush on, Jimmy finds himself caught in a series of escalating confrontations and personal disappointments.

In 1964, Jimmy Cooper, a London mod, vents his angst through scooter riding and brawling with rockers. After a retaliatory attack on his friend Spider, the group travels to Brighton for a bank holiday. Jimmy hopes to impress a girl named Steph, but she chooses to ride with another mod. The group attempts to buy drugs from a gangster but is cheated, leading them to burgle a pharmacy for Dexamyl. In Brighton, Jimmy encounters 'Ace Face,' a flamboyant mod. After a series of dance hall interactions and a beachside riot where Jimmy is arrested, Jimmy's life spirals. His mother discovers his drugs and kicks him out; he loses his job and learns Steph is now dating his friend Dave. After his scooter is crashed, a depressed Jimmy takes pills and returns to Brighton. He discovers Ace Face has a menial job as a bellboy. Jimmy steals Ace's Vespa and rides toward Beachy Head. The film ends with Jimmy riding toward the cliff-edge, looking at the sea, and the scooter crashing over the cliff-top.
