The story
Hansi, a cynical and grumpy man, pushes his mother Gucki through the city in her wheelchair. Gucki has disabilities affecting her ability to walk and speak. Their continuous journey lasts 24 hours, during which they encounter a varied procession of city residents: a tipsy postman, strict police officers, artists, kidnappers, amusement-park operators, clients and prostitutes, singers, sausage-stand owners, politicians, a lawyer, and a doctor. The article presents the walk and these encounters as the film's central storyline.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A continuous storyline forms the basis of the film. The cynical, grumpy Hansi (Alfred Dorfer) pushes his mother Gucki (Vera Borek), who has disabilities affecting her ability to walk and speak, through the city in her wheelchair. In his monologues, he wishes her dead several times—once, he leaves her briefly standing at a railway crossing and announces that he will leave her there until a train comes. The walk lasts a total of 24 hours in the film. Along the way, the two encounter various characters devised by Qualtinger: a tipsy postman (Lukas Resetarits), two excessively strict police officers (Hanno Pöschl and Wolf Bachofner), artists, kidnappers, Prater amusement-park operators, male clients and prostitutes, schlager singers, sausage-stand owners, corrupt politicians (Fritz Muliar), a lawyer, and a doctor (Roland Düringer and Karl Markovics).
