The story
In Southern Germany in 1928, Otto Groschenbügel, known as Quax, wins free sports-pilot training in a competition, though he had hoped for a different prize. The win makes him an overnight celebrity in his hometown of Dünkelstätt. Despite being a coward, he feels compelled to attend the course after all his boasting, rather than lose face. But the flying school has little patience for undisciplined braggarts like Quax, and soon advises him to drop out.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Southern Germany, 1928: Otto Groschenbügel, known as Quax, a junior employee at a transport office, wins free sports-pilot training at the Bergried flying school in a competition. He had actually hoped to win a different prize, but the grand prize also suits him: overnight, it makes him a celebrity in his hometown of Dünkelstätt. Although he is really a coward, he has to attend the course so as not to lose face after all his boasting. Since undisciplined braggarts like Quax are not welcome at the flying school, he is advised after only a short time to drop out. Meanwhile, in Dünkelstätt, where nobody knows why he has returned so soon, Quax is celebrated as a flying hero. To live up to expectations—and also out of disappointment that his girlfriend Adelheid has been unfaithful while he was away—he returns to Bergried to continue his training. In time, he really does become a disciplined pilot there and even proves to be talented. As a reward, fate also has a new girlfriend in store for him: the nice Marianne, who has already helped him out of several tight spots. At the end of the film, two years later, Quax is working as a disciplined flight instructor at the Bergried flying school. He then has his first flying lesson with one of his new students; the word “The End” is now written on the airplane.
