The story
Leone, a naive young man raised in an orphanage in a Sicilian town, has long been in love with Viola, who does not return his feelings. His life is upended when he learns that he is not an orphan after all. Two men working for a dying mafia boss bring Leone to the boss’s villa, where his newly discovered father expects him to take over the criminal organization. The young man’s sudden arrival sets in motion an awkward and unlikely transition into the world of organized crime, as the boss’s trusted associates try to prepare him for his unexpected role.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A mafia boss on his deathbed is told that he has an adult illegitimate son. Delighted, he orders his right-hand man, lawyer Enrico Greco, to bring the son to his bedside and prepare him to succeed as head of the criminal organization. Two trusted men, Vito Mancuso and Salvo La Mantia, are tasked with tracking down the young man and bringing him before the boss. The son is named Leone. He is a naive young man who has lived since birth in an orphanage run by the eccentric parish priest of a Sicilian town, Don Isidoro. He has been hopelessly in love for years with Viola, a local girl who has never returned his feelings, and is opposed by the municipal police officer. His life changes when he discovers that he is not an orphan: Salvo and Vito bring him to the Boss’s villa without much difficulty. Their meeting lasts only a very short time, because Leone inadvertently “kills” his father by crushing the tubes of his respirator, thereby becoming the new boss of the crime family. Vito and Salvo are then faced with the difficult task of training Leone, including carrying out missions bordering on the absurd, such as recovering a shipment of drugs from a Colombian drug trafficker. All of Leone’s actions are monitored through a microphone hidden in a rosary by police officer Sonia Morbelli, who had pretended to be Leone’s friend after meeting him at the cemetery where his father is buried. At the meeting to elect the new “boss of bosses,” Leone unwittingly gets all the rival clan bosses arrested. His love for Sonia is unrequited, although she is fond of him, and he returns to the orphanage where he grew up and to his old life.
