Believing in reincarnation, he consults Dr. Ludovico Stern, an esotericist in a small town in central Italy. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Giacomo is the heir to a major industrial family; his father, Ulisse, died by suicide when Giacomo was four. Still unable to get over this loss, his mother remarried an avaricious man, whom she left in charge of the family business. Their second marriage produced Ginevra, who is entrusted with managing the company. Giacomo, meanwhile, prefers to devote himself to thoughts and daydreams; he neither works nor drives. He has never shown any interest in the family business. Believing in reincarnation, and after reading some books, Giacomo meets Dr. Ludovico Stern, an esotericist living in a small town in central Italy. Stern reveals that he has identified the father’s current reincarnation: a Roman man named Mario Pitagora. Mario has no assets or income, is unemployed and weighed down by debts; he also has marital problems and problems with his children. Giacomo manages to meet him, and a close friendship develops between them. Mario takes advantage of Giacomo’s comfortable circumstances in an attempt to solve his problems. Although Giacomo does not fully understand Mario’s life or his lies, he eventually forms a sincere friendship with him. This encounter therefore changes both their lives forever.
