Facing unemployment and the threat of losing custody of her sister, Sam is offered a life-changing sum to become a surrogate.

The story

After the chicken-processing plant where they worked closes, friends Sam and Céline are unemployed and struggle to make ends meet in Saint-Chamond. Sam is also trying to keep custody of her younger sister, Kim, whose serious behavioral problems followed a road accident that killed their mother. Social services are threatening to place Kim in foster care. Then Sam meets Paul, a lawyer for the plant’s executives, who offers her €200,000 to carry a child for him and his London-based partner, Gordon, and relinquish all rights after the birth. The offer could help Sam and Céline pursue their dream of owning a bar, but it presents them with an ethical dilemma.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sam and Céline find themselves unemployed after the closure of Coquelet, the chicken-processing plant where they worked in Saint-Chamond, in the Loire region. The two friends live together and struggle to make ends meet. Sam also has to fight to keep custody of her younger sister, Kim, who has serious behavioral problems following a road accident in which their mother died while the little girl was in the car. Social services are threatening to place Kim in foster care. By chance, Sam meets Paul, the lawyer for Coquelet’s executives. He then proposes a deal to Sam: she can become the surrogate mother of the child he wants to have with his London-based partner, Gordon. The two men offer her €200,000 if she agrees to carry the child and give up all rights to it after its birth. Sam and Céline face a dilemma: the proposal raises ethical concerns for them, but they also know that the money could let them buy the bar “Le Chaudron,” which they dream of owning, and that improving their financial situation would prevent Kim from being placed in foster care. Meanwhile, Dylan, who is in love with Sam, views the situation with disapproval.
