When two environmental scientists are kidnapped in Niger, a hostage crisis becomes entangled with international uranium negotiations.
The story
Jean-Michel Ledantec and Coralie Martin, scientists with an environmental NGO, are investigating radioactive pollution at uranium mines operated by French group Urania in Niger when they are kidnapped in the Arlit region. As France renegotiates the price of uranium with Niger, officials view the hostage-taking as a possible source of leverage. Acting under a Quai d’Orsay mandate, Hugo Geoffroy travels to Niamey to meet Colonel Aboubacar, Niger’s internal-security chief, and Yassine, a contact designated by the kidnappers’ leader, Abou Cherif, to negotiate with France. Meanwhile, Chinese industrialists approach Aboubacar with interest in the country’s uranium deposits.
