Full plot (contains spoilers)
The screenplay is based on one of the finest works from Jorge Amado’s mature period. The action takes place in Salvador, the capital of Bahia. A crowd of friends—vagabonds, women of easy virtue, loafers, and drunks—waits eagerly for their leader, looking forward to the next holiday. But, by the will of fate, the former civil servant dies alone in his bed from alcohol abuse. These bohemians, who resist the dominance of the bourgeoisie, cannot understand that the soul of their group—Quincas—could die and leave them to fend for themselves. Unable to accept the loss of their king, instead of holding a sad funeral, his friends take him, drunk, into the midst of a lively celebration, as if he were still alive. As a result of that night’s adventures, the hero meets his true death at sea.
