Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1956, during the Algerian War, March, Charpentier, and Dax, all reservists, find themselves in a disciplinary battalion serving in the colonial troops. They are then caught up in the machinery of war, torture, and death. Commander Lecoq must form an elite unit from the resisters, whose political motivations vary. Yves Boisset drew heavily on Commander Jean Pouget for the character of Lecoq, as well as on the Train March Battalion, which Pouget commanded.
