Full plot (contains spoilers)

José María is a construction worker, and Rosa is a live-in domestic worker. They are South American immigrants working in Spain, and they have been a couple for only a few weeks. José María has a volatile personality, and an argument leads to a violent confrontation with his foreman, culminating in the latter’s accidental death. Unsure what to do, he takes refuge in the mansion where Rosa works, without telling anyone—not even her. Hidden away in the abandoned attic, José María begins a secret life. Half ghost, half “voyeur,” he listens and watches everything, aware of the constant risk of being discovered: he steals food at night, and his only company is the house’s rats. From the shadows, he becomes a witness to the sad, lonely lives of the Torres family, while also watching Rosa’s daily routine at work. Rosa is loved by the family, but she is also subjected to verbal and physical abuse. Unable to do anything, José María watches it all as his anger grows. One day, José María discovers a second telephone line in the house and calls Rosa without revealing where he is. They begin a “long-distance” relationship, eagerly awaiting the day they can be together again. But a new revelation will force José María to remain hidden…
