In postwar Munich, Kati waits among other women for her missing husband—and meets a man who claims to have been in a camp with him.

The story

In spring 1945, pregnant Kati Zeiler shelters in an air-raid bunker with her young daughter as their home and hair salon are bombed. She flees with her daughter and friend Leni to the countryside, where she gives birth as American soldiers occupy the village. After the war, Kati supports her two children in devastated Munich, working as a tram conductor and clearing rubble. She waits at the central station with other women for returning soldiers, holding her husband's photograph. There she meets Hans Stadler, who claims he was in a camp with her husband.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Spring 1945: After her husband Felix is sent back to the Eastern Front shortly after Christmas, the apartment and hair salon of pregnant Kati Zeiler are bombed out while she is sheltering with her little daughter in a large air-raid bunker. Together with her daughter and her friend Leni, she flees to the countryside, where she gives birth to another girl just as American soldiers are occupying the village. After the war, she gets by with her two children, working as a tram conductor and clearing rubble in devastated Munich. When trains carrying returning soldiers arrive at Munich Central Station, she stands on the platform with many other women. She holds a photograph of her husband. There she also meets Hans Stadler, who claims to have been in a camp with her husband. Stadler, who used to live nearby in a house that has since been destroyed, builds himself makeshift shelter in Kati’s courtyard. Gradually, fewer and fewer women remain on the platform. Only Kati continues to hold up the photograph. With each passing day, her hope that her missing husband will return grows weaker. She gets to know Hans better and falls in love with him, and her life begins to settle into a routine again. Her older daughter already calls Hans “Daddy.” But one day Felix, whom Kati had believed missing, suddenly returns. She has to choose between the two men. Out of loyalty, she chooses her husband over her new love.
