A dating-app idea meant to protect users from bad dates goes awry when its ratings become a tool for bullying.
The story
Teresa dates different men nearly every weekend, while her friend Patricia, a single mother and romantic, hopes for a committed relationship. Teresa comes up with an app that lets users tag and rate dates afterward, aiming to protect people from bad dates and false expectations. Through a dating app, Teresa meets Anton, whose girlfriend had proposed an open relationship even though he had been ready to get engaged. Anton brings the technical expertise, his best friend Paul provides funding, and Patricia joins as a graphic designer. Once their app launches, users can create their own rating categories, and the project starts to change in ways its creators did not intend.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Teresa meets different guys almost every weekend, while her friend Patricia, a single mother and a romantic, is interested in a committed relationship. This gives Teresa the idea of developing an app that lets people tag and rate a date with a hashtag afterward. The aim is to protect users from bad dates and false expectations. Through a dating app, she meets Anton, whose long-term girlfriend had suggested an open relationship so she could explore her sexuality, while he had actually been ready to get engaged. As a computer scientist, he has the technical skills they need. His best friend Paul provides the project with the necessary funding. Patricia joins the team as a graphic designer. After just a few weeks of development, the app goes online. But when users are able to add their own rating categories, the dating app increasingly turns into a bullying app. After a former colleague of Teresa's attempts suicide after receiving a derogatory rating category on the app, the group decides to shut it down. A difficult period of uncertainty follows, at the end of which Anton breaks up with his girlfriend Cissi after realizing that she is only interested in her own well-being. Anton and Teresa then find their way back to each other and develop the app “Magic Moment,” which makes it possible to find people one has run into by chance again by placing a virtual heart at the relevant location. The app becomes a great success.
