Full plot (contains spoilers)
Glocke is a teenager who is fed up with all the talk about how everything is fine. The world is going downhill, he says, because the wrong people are in charge. At least, that’s what he tells Lena to impress her. To win her affection, he sets fire with her to the Hummer belonging to a rich pimp. During the ensuing chase by two security guards, Glocke manages to get away from them and deliver an anti-capitalist speech. The recording goes viral soon afterward. But all Glocke really wants is to get away and make a genuine fresh start. So he and Paule respond to an ad placed by a “Friedrich,” who wants to live together with others in the wilderness. Anyone interested is to meet at the main train station, wearing a red cap as a sign of recognition. There, the two meet Elias, Judith, and Steffi. The group now sets off, following clues like a scavenger hunt in search of Friedrich’s cabin. Although they are initially somewhat wary of one another, a sense of solidarity gradually develops among them, and together they manage to stand up to the difficulties they encounter. Glocke and Judith grow closer, and a romance develops. While looking for condoms in Elias’s backpack, Glocke discovers that Elias has staged the whole thing and that there is no Friedrich. This puts the group under immense strain. Elias is tied to a tree and interrogated by the others, but he gives no satisfactory answers. Steffi hangs a container holding a queen bee around Elias’s neck, causing him to be attacked by numerous bees. The group then tends to the injured Elias and decides to continue looking for the cabin. Eventually, they find the abandoned cabin and settle there, providing for themselves far from civilization. Glocke and Judith continue their romance there. As the group enjoys its fresh start, three more people arrive, saying that they too had been looking for Friedrich’s cabin. The group is unsettled by the possibility that more people may still follow Friedrich’s ad. They decide to read the others a fabricated letter from Friedrich, in which he plausibly explains his absence. The dropouts continue their lives as self-sufficient settlers.
