In a dystopian future, a teenager joins a high-stakes race within a massive virtual reality simulation to win control of the digital world.
The story
In a dystopian 2045, much of humanity uses the OASIS, a virtual reality simulation, to escape the real world. Following the death of its creator, a pre-recorded message announces a contest that offers ownership of the OASIS to the first person to find a hidden golden Easter egg. Teenage orphan Wade Watts discovers the contest and joins a group of other 'Gunters' to find the keys required to reach the prize. They must compete against the interests of a powerful corporation, led by Nolan Sorrento, who seeks to seize control of the virtual realm for his own corporate gain.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the year 2045, the OASIS is a massive virtual reality universe created by James Halliday. Upon his death, a contest is launched where the first person to find a hidden 'Easter egg' wins ownership of the simulation. Wade Watts, a teenager from a poor neighborhood, uses the avatar Parzival to compete alongside his friends, including Aech and Art3mis. They must navigate three challenges to obtain the Copper, Jade, and Crystal Keys. Meanwhile, Nolan Sorrento, the CEO of the rival corporation IOI, employs 'Sixers' to find the egg and seize control of the OASIS for advertising. After a series of trials, including a high-speed race and a journey through a recreation of the Overlook Hotel, the group faces a final confrontation on Planet Doom. During a massive battle against the Sixers, Sorrento uses a 'Cataclyst' bomb that destroys all avatars on the planet, including his own. Parzival survives using a special item and wins the final key. He refuses to sign a contract offered by the system and instead receives the Easter egg from Halliday's spirit. In the aftermath, Wade and his friends decide to share the management of the OASIS, choosing to close it on certain days to encourage people to spend more time in the real world.
