The story

On May 9, 2017, Reality Winner watches news coverage regarding the firing of James Comey. Twenty-five days later, she is confronted at her home by FBI agents Taylor and Garrick, who present a warrant to search her property. The film follows the ensuing interrogation in a disused bedroom. Winner, a translator for a government contractor, is questioned about the leak of classified documents to an online publication. While she initially denies knowledge, the tension builds as the agents probe the specifics of her work and the nature of the information she shared with the media.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film follows the interrogation of Reality Winner, a Persian translator who leaked a document from the National Security Agency's database regarding Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections. The dialogue is based on the actual FBI interrogation transcript. During the questioning, Winner initially denies knowledge but is eventually compelled to confess. The film features a fourth wall-breaking sequence where she ends the redactions of the transcript to reveal the specific details of the leak to the audience. As the interrogation concludes, she expresses concern for her pets before being taken into custody. The film ends with a textual epilogue explaining that she was denied bail, charged under the Espionage Act, and spent four years in jail, remaining on supervised release until November 2024.
