Four friends navigate the disillusionment of early adulthood and the complexities of modern relationships in Houston.
The story
Four friends who are recent college graduates live together in Houston, Texas. Coffeehouse guitarist Troy Dyer and budding filmmaker Lelaina Pierce are attracted to each other, although they have not acted on their feelings except for one brief, drunken encounter years ago. Troy is floundering, having lost several minimum-wage jobs, while Lelaina, a former valedictorian, struggles to find her footing in the professional world. She eventually takes a job as a production assistant for a demanding TV host. The story explores their individual struggles with career aspirations, personal identities, and the realities of life in the early 1990s.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Four friends, including Troy Dyer and Lelaina Pierce, live in Houston. Troy is a struggling musician, while Lelaina is an aspiring filmmaker working for a harsh TV host. Lelaina begins dating Michael Grates, a wealthy executive, while her roommate Vickie faces health risks from her lifestyle, and her friend Sammy struggles with his identity. After a series of personal and professional setbacks, Lelaina and Troy reconnect and share a night together, only for Troy to leave town. Following his father's death, Troy returns to reconcile with Lelaina. The film concludes with a meta-twist where a parody of their relationship is revealed to be the basis for a new television show on Michael's network.
