The story
Set during the California Gold Rush, the story follows Angel, a woman working as a prostitute in the mining town of Pair-a-Dice. Despite her history of hardship and the abuse she faces from her employers, she remains guarded and isolated. Her life takes a turn when Michael Hosea, a local farmer, falls in love with her at first sight. Despite her initial resistance and the complexities of her past, Michael's persistent devotion and commitment to her well-being begin to challenge her self-loathing and force her to confront her reality in a world where she has been treated as a commodity.

During the California Gold Rush, Angel works as a prostitute in Pair-a-Dice, suffering from a history of abuse and a lack of identity. Michael Hosea falls in love with her and eventually marries her, nursing her through her recovery. Their relationship grows, but Angel's past and insecurities lead her to flee when she believes she cannot have children. After a period of separation and various trials, including a stint working at a cafe where she is forced back into prostitution by a man named Duke, she finds her voice. She eventually exposes Duke's trafficking of girls, leading to his lynching. Years later, she reconciles with her past and her identity as Sarah, eventually reuniting with Michael to start a life together with their son.
